28. Beryl would emulate and then even surpass Nim Carline’s extreme training regime

There was, as ever, no science to these methods. More was simply better, regardless of how she felt or what else was going on in her life. It made for some punishing days. Carline’s firm belief was that you should do 100 miles every day for the six weeks leading up to the national 24-hour championships. And so Beryl did the same, sometimes more, albeit with one additional caveat. Whereas Carline would be slumped in a chair and soon fall asleep when he finished his training, Beryl refused to compromise on her usual domestic routine. ‘I used to train for about 8 hours a day and then come home to all the housework,’ she said. ‘I always made sure I was back in time to cook Charlie’s dinner, and I stood ironing for about 3 hours. The household is my responsibility.’ Beryl had also just accepted the position of president of the West Ardsley Townswomen’s Guild and, according to Mary Turner, the former secretary, ‘did an awful lot of work for us and attended lots of meetings’ during that year.

What Beryl did not tell any of her friends or clubmates was that she had begun to feel pain in her right knee in the weeks leading up to the race. Her solution? Dismiss the sensation and continue training in the same way. ‘But the condition grew worse and I wondered if I should ride,’ she later said. ‘My instinct and outlook told me that I should. There was no point in trying for anything other than a record. In myself I was very fit, clocking up great mileages in spite of my knee, feeling that, if I was to ride, I could not miss a day’s training. I was determined that nobody should know. It was perhaps foolhardy … but I had set my heart on victory and a record which would top 500 miles.’

Cromack’s methodology was very different. He had virtually grown up on his bike in Warmsworth, from where he would make the 15-mile daily commutes to the Percy Jackson Grammar School. His three A levels were in pure maths, applied maths and physics. He became a maths teacher at Tadcaster Grammar School and later joined the Royal Air Force. As they do for Beryl, his friends and family all still use the words ‘single-minded’ and ‘disciplined’ to describe him, but he was more calculated and careful in his approach. Cromack had devised his schedule on an even-paced curve that would get him to just over 500 miles, and he remained within 2 minutes of his plan during the first half of the race. He also had a theory about his gearing and would ride no more than 82 inches for the vast majority of the race. ‘He had a mathematician’s brain, but he could suffer,’ says Geoffrey. That much was evident a year earlier when he amazed fellow riders and team officials in the gruelling 14-day Peace Race by completing the course despite suffering from bronchitis.
